ABOUT US

The term "Community College" generally refers to a higher educational institution that provides workforce education and college transfer academic programs. Some institutions also feature athletic teams and dormitories, similar to traditional universities.

Bharathiar University Initiative

Bharathiar University launched the Community College System in April 2007 and institutionalized it as a statutory institution named Bharathiar University-Community College Consultancy Centre (BU-CCCC). This initiative aimed to expand access to education for underprivileged and disadvantaged communities.

Vision of the Community College

The vision of the Community College system is to empower the disadvantaged and underprivileged by imparting essential skills through various programs, enabling them to secure meaningful employment. This initiative seeks to:

  • Restore the human right to education for those who have been denied access.
  • Provide job-oriented, work-related, skills-based, and life-coping education.
  • Focus on uplifting the urban poor, rural poor, tribal poor, and women.

Historical Significance

Community Colleges were introduced in South India in 1995 as an alternative system of education. The system has since gained recognition for its efforts to bridge the gap in education and employment for underserved populations.

Government Support

The Government of Tamil Nadu has been a strong advocate of the Community College system:

  • Through its order No.163, HE (K2) Dept. dated 22.05.2008, and subsequent orders, the Tamil Nadu government has actively encouraged the establishment of Community Colleges.
  • At the national level, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, included the Community College system in both the 10th and 11th Five-Year Plans, recognizing its significance in skill development and education for employment.
